How ESA amounts work in 2026-27
- Private school, pre-K: Not covered. Students must be at least 5 by Oct 1 of the school year, so pre-K isn't covered.
- Private school, grades K-12, with an IEP: Up to $20,000 per child. Your child gets 90% of the state's per-student funding for your home school district plus the special education funding for their disability level, up to $20,000. The exact figure depends on your district and your child's IEP, service plan or CSEP.
- Private school, grades K-12, without an IEP: Disability required. This account is for students with an IEP, service plan or CSEP. A brother or sister of an eligible student can also get an account of up to $8,000.
- Homeschool, pre-K: Not covered. Students must be at least 5 by Oct 1 of the school year, so pre-K isn't covered.
- Homeschool, grades K-12, with an IEP: Up to $20,000 per child. Your child gets 90% of the state's per-student funding for your home school district plus the special education funding for their disability level, up to $20,000. The exact figure depends on your district and your child's IEP, service plan or CSEP. Families who teach at home can use the account; the child still takes the state test or the alternative named in the IEP.
- Homeschool, grades K-12, without an IEP: Disability required. This account is for students with an IEP, service plan or CSEP. A brother or sister of an eligible student can also get an account of up to $8,000.
When the money arrives
- Private school and homeschool with an IEP: Money goes into your ClassWallet account four times a year, in August, October, December and February. The state names the months but not the exact days or how the award is split. 1st: Aug 2026; 2nd: Oct 2026; 3rd: Dec 2026; 4th: Feb 2027.
Good to know
- Pre-K isn't covered. Students must be between 5 and 22 by Oct 1 of the school year.
- Only for students with a disability (an active Indiana IEP, service plan or CSEP) and their brothers and sisters. Siblings get up to $8,000.
- There is a household income limit. Older program pages put it at 400% of the free and reduced price lunch level; check the 2026-27 handbook for the current figure.
- Money is limited and awarded first come, first served after a priority window for returning students. The 2026-27 application window ran Mar 1 to Sep 1, 2026.
- 2026-27 is the first year the Indiana Department of Education runs the program instead of the Treasurer of State.
- Your child can't be enrolled in a public school or online public school, or use a Choice Scholarship (voucher), at the same time.
- Up to $1,000 of unused 2026-27 money can roll over starting July 2027.
